CHARLOTTE, NC– Women’s soccer team Charlotte 49ers used two second-half corner kicks to their advantage to score their first shutout of the season in a 2-0 win over Louisiana Tech on Thursday night (September 22) at Transamerica Field.
Charlotte (2-6-2, 1-2-0 C-USA) scored both goals from set pieces Bailey Manfredi Both deliver to earn a pair of assists. she found Haley Shand at the near post four minutes into the second frame to break the goalless tie and then delivered the ball Bag Hudson deep in the box 10 minutes later for the insurance balance sheet.
The Niners beat LA Tech (3-6-2, 1-1-1 C-USA) in the match 22:2 and kept the guests without a shot from the 22nd minute. Brenna Murray got the start in goal and made the one save she needed in the first half for the Niners to earn the shutout victory.
“I was beyond excited to see how we implement some of the things we’ve been working on,” said the head coach Brandi Fontaine said after the win. “It was good to play against a team that tries to own and hold the ball so we can work on those things too. We’ve talked about the last third, the execution and our decision-making over the last few days and I ‘ I’m really proud of the group for stepping up. I wish we hid a little more but I was really happy that we were able to find some opportunities and bury them in the back of the net.
The Niners controlled most of the first 45 minutes and shot out LA Tech 9-2 in the first half but couldn’t get past the visiting goaltender. Macey Bader and Hudson were the driving force behind Charlotte’s pressure in the first, making four and three shots respectively. Bader had blocked one and narrowly missed two of their attempts, while Hudson sent one from the box just over the bar in what was the Green and White best chance of halftime.
Charlotte was not long in coming in the second half as Shand scored her first goal of the season in the 49th minute. Charlotte received her fifth corner of the evening and Manfredi delivered it to the near post where Shand was able to get behind the defense to deflect it past the goalkeeper and score the goal.
The Niners repeated the feat 10 minutes later in the 59th minute to double the lead in much the same way. After the Lady Techsters sent back-to-back corner kicks for Green and White over the goal line, CLT earned their third straight win. The third time, the charm proved true for the 49ers as Manfredi’s deep delivery found Hudson’s head, who headed the ball over the LA Tech keeper and under the bar to make it 2-0.
CLT kept up the pressure after the two goals and unleashed nine more shots in the last 30 minutes of the game, one of which required a save from Lady Techster’s goalkeeper. All that offensive pressure also led to strong defensive play, with Charlotte keeping LA Tech to zero shots in the second half en route to his first shutout of the season.
Charlotte is back in action at home on Sunday (September 25) when UTEP visits Transamerica Field for a lunchtime game.
