It wasn’t a good display for the Georgia Tech defense against Ole Miss yesterday, allowing for over 500 total offensive yards, including more than 300 on the ground. The defense seemed out of position for most snaps, unable to stop the running back tandem of Zach Evans and Quinshon Judkins.
That defense doesn’t look any better than last year if yesterday is any indication and there will be a lot of work to do before they face UCF on Saturday.
Here are the grades for each defensive unit against Ole Miss.
Line of Defense – F
The defensive line was one of the reasons Ole Miss was allowed to run more than 300 meters. They didn’t get any push forward and got into the backfield. Also, they didn’t get any pressure on the quarterback.
Zeek Biggers led the unit with six tackles, Keion White had five and Kyle Kennard had three. There is simply no consistent impact from any player on this unit and this will be an issue against UCF next week if not addressed.
Both Ace Eley and Charlie Thomas had double-digit tackles, but it’s hard to give a good mark when so many rushing yards are allowed.
Eley also had a sack in play and three for losses and a forced fumble. Eley and Thomas are the two best defenders and both can play better than on Saturday. They were often out of position on run plays and also missed tackles. Hopefully Eley and Thomas can recover in time against UCF.
Ole Miss didn’t throw the ball much, but they got chunk plays when they finished. Jaxson Dart was 10-16 for 207 yards and averaging 20 yards per completion and 12 yards per attempt. Safety Jaylon King was intercepted, but the Yellow Jackets were unable to take advantage.
Ole Miss put a few boys past secondary and there were a few thows that Dart missed. The duel wasn’t that great either. Zamari Walton led the unit with eight tackles and both KJ Wallace and Myles Sims finished the tournament with at least five. This unit will be tested in the coming weeks and they need to step up their game.
